Posture Correction Q & A

Posture Correction Lincoln ParkWhy is Posture So Important?

The human body is under constant stress. One of the physical stresses we can never change is gravity. The average human head is 10-15 pounds. For every extra inch of forward head posture we increase the weight of our head by ten pounds. This constant stress leads to tension in the muscles and ligaments and eventually arthritis and degeneration.

Since everything we do is in front of us, it is imperative that we maintain and keep our posture healthy.  The brain is the only organ in the body that can relate to space and time, so if we have unhealthy posture the body will adapt and affect other parts of our spine.

What Happens When a Person’s Posture is Suffering?

Poor posture and posture problems occur when an imbalance is present in the tension and length relationship of the muscle groups. This is also referred to as postural misalignment. This can cause the pelvis and the load bearing joints to be moved from their proper position. An array of negative side effects can result from this, including ankle, back, shoulder, neck, and knee pain and it can can also impact the organs. When an imbalance is caused the muscles designed to carry weight can atrophy since they aren’t being used the way they should and the opposite muscles become too strong. This pulls the body out of alignment. Usual postural problems can include hip or shoulder elevation which makes one part higher than the other, rotation of hip or trunk which causes a part to move in front of the other, bow legs and knock-knees.

How Can the Chiropractor Help?

The chiropractor will evaluate the patient’s posture and inquire about his or her physical symptoms. The doctor will also compare the person’s postural alignment with a model of ideal alignment. Each patient’s posture and physical mobility will be surveyed and links to any discomfort will be addressed. Using this information, the chiropractor will design a personalized exercise and manual manipulation program created to correct the patient’s specific issues.
