Pregnancy Chiropractor Lincoln ParkWhat Does Pregnancy Do to a Woman’s Posture?

The added stress of carrying a baby and the effects of the hormone relaxin on the body can dramatically effect a woman’s posture. Any postural distortions may show indicators of neurologic stress. The most common symptoms a woman may experience are:

  • Low Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Neck Pain
  • Pain Between Shoulder Blades
  • Tingling/Numbness in hands and fingers
  • Headaches
  • Sleep Disturbances
  • Stressful/Painful Delivery

Why is it so important to see the Chiropractor during your pregnancy?

Women under chiropractic care during their pregnancy experience easier and less painful deliveries. When the pelvis is in its proper alignment it allows the baby to be delivered with less stress. Pressure on the sensitive nerves of the low back is also decreased – which may be the main cause of low back pain during delivery.

Can I Do Anything to Help?

There are many simple changes which can help pregnant women minimize discomfort and protect their spine and posture from severe issues including:

  • Engage in safe, low-impact exercises at least 3 times a week
  • Strenuous activity should be kept to no more than 15 minutes and the heart rate should not exceed 140.
  • Stop activity if dizziness, nausea, weakness, blurred vision, vaginal bleeding, increased swelling or heart palpitations occur
  • Wear flat shoes
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Avoid heavy lifting
  • Employ healthy eating habits
  • Sleep on the left side with a pillow between the knees
  • If you work at a desk, make sure the set up is ergonomically correct, including monitor position, a foot rest, and take breaks every 30 minutes
